How has the Covid-19 pandemic impacted the development of biometrics?

Heading into 2020, we were looking forward to penetrating new markets with our portfolio of modern biometric products, majority of which were fingerprint based. When the pandemic hit, there was an immediate shift to touchless and contactless technology because, suddenly, no one wanted to touch anything because they were afraid of spreading COVID. This triggered a dramatic drop in the demand for fingerprint biometrics, almost overnight. On the contrary, face recognition technology gained almost a decade’s worth of adoption during the pandemic period.

Entrances that were focused on access control and workforce management became so much more, and I see this as a positive thing. COVID-19 propelled the adoption of modern technology that makes entrances more valuable. Leading manufacturers are adding temperature and wellness screening, no-mask detection, and face recognition while wearing a mask to their biometric offerings because these integrated, all-in-one solutions are now what the enterprise world needs.

How have developments in other technology, such as AI/Machine learning combined with biometric technology to impact security, health, and wellness?

The typical product development cycle in our industry is 1 to 2 years, but this is unacceptable during COVID-19. Industries that help bring people back to work need to evolve quickly and doing everything yourself is slow. When a company wants to develop a new solution quickly, they should analyze what technologies they currently have and find partners who can fill the gaps effectively. We have taken the lead in integrating other solutions with our technology and vice-versa to create a diverse ecosystem of top-notch partners to deliver a customizable end-to-end solution.

Security and biometric companies should provide an autonomous, all-in-one solution. How would you respond to suggestions that a heavy focus on touch-free technology is a ‘fad’ of its time, and that once concerns surrounding the pandemic ease organizations and people will be happy to revert to touch technology?

Touchless technology is here to stay. People will be apprehensive to touch shared surfaces for decades to come – in our not-so-distant past, we needed vaccine cards to travel from certain countries to others, and this went on for about a decade.
In light of government lockdowns and stay-at-home orders, in reality there is a high percentage of work that simply cannot be performed at home; hence it will be difficult to prevent the spread of illness. For the management teams and owners of essential businesses, a challenge brought on by the pandemic was the added responsibility to address the health and safety concerns of employees who are required to come into the worksite, and their families whom they return to after work. Touchless solutions will be in high demand at such organizations to demonstrate to their employees, their families and the community that they have invested soundly to ensure a healthy work environment.

In this era of information, data from our medical history also shows that pandemic outbreaks have increased in frequency over the last 50 years due to globalization and modernization. Because of this, touchless security is going to be a concern for the global community at large now and in the foreseeable future.”

What principles underpin Invixium’s approach to privacy and biometrics?

Biometrics should be banned from surveillance technologies. Because we sell into the physical access and workforce management markets, we are very strong proponents of keeping information private. Rather than worry about privacy concerns, biometric companies should focus on educating people. Getting consent to capture biometrics – if explained properly and with transparency – is easy to do because companies are using this technology to protect the health, safety, and security of their staff and visitors.

As with all cutting-edge technologies high costs can present barriers to uptake for smaller organizations and those in emerging markets. How does Invixium approach questions of affordability in different markets?

Instead of putting the focus on the cost of the technology, shouldn’t the top consideration be the potential productivity loss if an individual enters a worksite while they are COVID-19 positive, forcing a shutdown? The cost of something is relative to the cost incurred by not having it. Based on the new technology available on the market, businesses now have the option to implement a biometric system that provides multifaceted protection against a combination of COVID-19, time theft and unauthorised access, making the upfront investment a sound decision and better yet, a proactive one. While advancements in biometrics due to economies of scale are helping costs go down, the real question is about ROI. Yes, plastic access cards are cheaper to buy, but they cannot prevent shutdown in the same way that touchless biometrics and wellness screening can.

There is no substitution for face-to-face collaboration. Whether it’s because of poor Internet connections, increased distractions, or any other unique challenges that working remotely brings, people struggle to communicate when they work from home. The outcomes of this struggle are numerous: slower pace, misunderstood ideas, increased revisions, and lackluster results. All of these can harm bottom lines, innovation, culture, and more.

No Policy Should Be One Size Fits All

Open offices were a trend for years before the pandemic. When COVID-19 struck, these workplaces could not comply with social distancing – so sending people home was the easiest and best decision to protect their health. Work-life integration is one thing. Being “always-on” is unacceptable. People need a separation of work time and home time that the pandemic took away for many at the cost of mental health. Management needs to consider this perspective: not everyone who can work from home should, wants to, or can successfully do so.

Manufacturing, mining, agriculture, and other in-person work are left out of work from home conversations because this topic is biased toward office workers. Offices exist to offer a service or support a product. In the Western world, service industries are prevalent, so work from home is achievable there. However, the rest of the world majorly relies on in-person work, mainly manufacturing, to keep economies moving. In a global economy where multi-national companies are the norm, a unilateral decision for everyone to work from home or not work from home is short-sighted. If office staff is allowed to work from home while manufacturing staff comes to a worksite, business processes, innovation, relationship building, and lead times will slow down.

Work from home also welcomes catastrophic cybersecurity risks. Sectors like finance and government need tight security and IT policy to protect sensitive information. Even engineering and manufacturing companies have critical data like designs and code that need to be secure. IT staff can lock down office Wi-Fi, but it is impossible to adequately secure every employee’s home Internet to the same degree. Anxiety over cybersecurity skyrockets during work from home because information is every company’s most valuable asset. The risk of theft needs to be mitigated in any way possible.

Looking Ahead to Post-Pandemic Business

I strongly encourage all businesses to do whatever is necessary to re-tool their worksites and encourage their people to return to work as soon as possible. This is not only to restore profit and productivity but also to ensure the wellbeing and professional development of staff members. An entire generation of workers has never stepped into an office, collaborated with peers face-to-face, and begun to develop soft skills like communication, patience, and teamwork. A return to in-person work is imperative for today’s managers to oversee the education of tomorrow’s leaders. The road to scale and innovation has no shortcuts, and new employees need mentorship to learn how this is done. Without this necessary experience, the business leaders of tomorrow – and the enterprises they run – will suffer.

The joint solution, provided by integrating Gallagher’s Command Centre with IXM WEB, delivers a complete answer for visitor screening, access control or healthy workforce management, including temperature screening, mask detection and more. The Command Centre platform will notify administrators of elevated body temperature or mask-related access events in the Alarm Viewer. Along with Invixium’s flagship healthy access solution, Gallagher will re-sell Invixium products to provide their global customers with a range of products to satisfy their most demanding health and safety requirements.

As part of their COVID-19 response, Gallagher and Invixium collaborated to develop an integrated, user-friendly solution to address the global market’s immediate, health-oriented needs.

IXM TITAN with Enhancement Kit is Invixium’s flagship biometric reader and hallmark of its COVID-19 solution, which delivers simultaneous face recognition and elevated body temperature detection at the medial canthus (tear duct). Through this integrated solution, TITAN will now communicate health events such as temperature screening and mask detection to Gallagher’s security management platform, Command Centre. Alarm notification events – such as elevated body temperature or the absence of a face mask – will be captured in Command Centre’s Alarm Viewer.

Furthermore, this seamless integration allows users of Command Centre to perform biometric enrollment and device management directly within the Gallagher software, along with two-way synchronization of cardholders and access groups. This integration also supports multiple access card assignment (up to 10 cards per cardholder) so businesses that issue more than one card to the same person can fully employ TITAN’s card-reading features.
